Sustainability has become increasingly important in the context of global warming and preservation of the environment. That being so, contemplating sustainable approaches to design, manufacture, construction and maintenance of mechanical components and structures will play a decisive role in shaping the future. The journal Sustainable Mechanical Engineering and Design focusses on application-oriented research in the field of engineering mechanics that tackles the pressing challenges of climate change (for instance, aligned with the objectives of the European Green Deal). Particularly, engineering challenges in the areas of failure and damage within the context of sustainable mechanical engineering and design, including but not limited to fatigue, fracture mechanics, tribology, corrosion, and their interaction. Manuscripts detailing a newly developed test rig design, methodology for condition and damage monitoring, or recommendations for changes to the state-of-the-art of codes and standards are also encouraged.
