La revue Verve (1937–60): Un tremplin pour la carrière de Tériade dans les éditions d’art/The Review Verve (1937–60) : A Springboard for Tériade's Career as Art Editor
Abstract
Tériade (1897–1983) fonda la revue Verve ainsi que la maison d’édition d’art homonyme en même temps à Paris en 1937. Cet article montre que le journal a servi à Tériade de tremplin dans sa carrière dans l’édition artistique. D’une part, Verve était un outil de médiation pour publier des livres d’artistes et des livres illustrés ainsi que pour promouvoir le travail d’artistes modernes de renom, un choix parfaitement en accord avec la politique française officielle de l’après-seconde guerre mondiale, qui entendait incorporer l’art moderne dans le patrimoine culturel français. D’autre part, cela a permis à Tériade de prouver que la tradition de l’imprimerie et de l’iconographie pouvait continuer à prospérer sous une forme contemporaine et qu’elle pouvait accroître la valeur artistique et commerciale des livres d’artistes et des livres illustrés. De plus, discuter les relations entre la revue de Tériade et ses autres publications révèle un jeu complexe d’interdépendances et d’échanges de capital olique et relationnel entre les différents acteurs du monde de l’art.

Tériade (1897–1983) launched at the same time the art journal Verve as well as the homonymous art publishing house in Paris in 1937. This article shows that the journal served as a springboard for Tériade’s career in art publishing. On the one hand, Verve was a mediating tool for publishing artists’ books and illustrated books as well as for promoting the work of renowned modern artists, a choice fully compatible with the post-World War II official French policy of incorporating modern art into French cultural heritage. On the other hand, it allowed Tériade to prove that printing and the iconographic tradition could continue to thrive in a contemporary form, that this could increase the artistic and commercial value of both artists’ books and illustrated books. Moreover, discussing the relationship between Tériade’s journal and his other publications reveals a complex interplay of interdependencies and exchanges of economic, symbolic and relational capital between the various actors of the art world.
