Nederland, Vlaanderen, België: Over de visie van Franstalige lezers op de recente Nederlandse literatuur

Abstract

The present article focuses on how French-speaking readers perceive
recent Dutch and Flemish literature and examines how French-speakers
have access to it. Special attention is paid to French translations of
Dutch and Flemish novels, which have been published during the past
twenty years. This survey shows that the most translated writers are
Cees Nooteboom, Hella S. Haasse, and Hugo Claus. Some hypotheses
are put forward and attempt to explain this choice. The article ends with
a brief discussion on the (limited) importance Dutch literature has in the
teaching of Dutch as a foreign language in French-speaking Belgium.
