Proactieve sportpolitiek in de oudheid: Het voorbeeld van de Ptolemaeën

Abstract
The idea of a 'proactive sports policy' might sound modern, but also in the
ancient Greek world some regions were particularly successful in the agonistic
circuit because cheir political leaders explicitly stimulated sports. After a
chronological overview of the distribution of Olympic victories over the
Greek world, this paper focuses on the example of third century BC Egypt,
for Egyptian participants did particularly well in both equestrian and athletic
events in this period. The analysis of their sports policy shows that the
Ptolemies offered financial support for talented sportsmen, built a professional
sports infrastructure, created a local circuit of games and publicized
their successes in the Greek world.
