Abstract

________

The South as well as the North “freed from the oppression’ by the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Because C. Breunesse in his book about the role of the Belgian and Northern Dutch political press in the narrative about the separation of 1830 provides new data about the fierce anti-Belgian discourses in the Northern Dutch political press, the discussion of the work is seized upon to point out that this issue has remained neglected in the historical literature. At the same time new source material also demonstrates that the hostile public opinion in the North was a far more important factor in the narrative about the separation than has been supposed up to now.
It was important both in London and during the suppression of the Belgian Orangism. Some of the historians supporting the Greater Dutch Movement briefly looked at it, but other Belgian historians hardly paid it any attention.
